Regenerative Dairy Is A Philosophy

We live in a world where there are shortcuts that let us control the naturally uncontrollable, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing in some ways. Science, technology, and innovation have helped all of us in one way or another, to stay healthy, stay connected to our loved ones, and more.

But when it comes to dairy farming, we think less control is actually better for everyone.

The word “regenerative” is powerful– it’s something that goes beyond sustainability into the act of actually healing. It’s about taking something that’s been lost and making it whole again, and hopefully, in turn, playing a role in making more of it. In the case of regenerative dairy farming, we’re regenerating the soil that grows the grass, and the grass that feeds the cows, in order for cows to be capable of producing the best milk to nourish our families.

Regenerative dairy farming means we adhere to a set of practices. But it also means that we adhere to a set of principles. Everyone has a slightly different point of view on this, but for us at Maple Hill, being 100% grass-fed organic is a philosophy about how we interact and partner with nature. And even though we’ve grown bigger than we ever expected, there are some things that haven't changed since we started out almost two decades ago.

We know farming animals is about fields. We believe in soil health. Regenerative farming is not about maintaining the status quo. We know that industrialization has done serious damage to the land that feeds all of us. We measure our soil to make sure it regains the right physical, chemical and biological characteristics, animal and plant biodiversity. That's because we know the healthier the soil, the healthier the cow. The healthier the cow, the healthier the milk they produce. The healthier the milk, the better the dairy we can put on the table. That doesn’t stop at just our 100% grass-fed milk. We’re also talking about our 100% grass-fed butter, our 100% grass-fed kefir, and our 100% grass-fed yogurts.

We trust the process. Regenerative farming requires a lot of trust between our farmers, the herd, and the pasture. Every day, Maple Hill farmers trust that the land will provide for their cows by growing healthy, abundant grass that keeps cows healthy and happy. Our farmers trust that in turn, the cows will help nourish the soil under them as they graze and roam the pasture. We know that trust is working when we see our cows produce the best milk out there.

Ultimately, regenerative farming requires us to believe that this is the right thing to do for many reasons: for the best dairy experience, for the health of our families, sake of our planet, to name a few. It’s intuitive, when you think about it. Because when we take care of nature, nature takes care of us.

At Maple Hill, we’ve been committed to regenerative practices since 2003 because we know the highest quality dairy begins with the health of soil, grass, and cows. We believe that 100% grass-fed organic dairy farming done right is the pinnacle of organic, nourishes families with the best nutrition, and leaves the earth better than we found it.
